Dr Ballantyne received her medical degree from the University of London UK. She trained in Anaesthesia at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford UK, before moving to Boston US in 1990. She became Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine in the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999. She moved to the University of Washington in 2011 as UW Medicine Professor of Education and Research. She has editorial roles in several leading journals and textbooks and is a widely published author. She was an early advocate for restraint in opioid prescribing for chronic pain, and has continued to focus her research, clinical practice and advocacy on rationalizing the role of opioids, and encouraging the development of alternatives when treating chronic pain.
